(Disclaimer: I understand the affinity and endearment when using terms as “my church” and its other variants we refer to our denomination. I also say that too or should I say used to. My aim is to foster togetherness and unity amongst brethren and denominations. To desist from segregation, exclusion and ostracising one another. So we can network, team up and synergise as we see the Day approaching as well as seeing each other as ONE!)
We need to stop this trend of calling your denomination, “my church” or referring to another denomination as “their church” or “a church”.
WE ARE ONE!
The church is an entity. Beyond an entity, she is alive! That it is called the body of christ. And the life of The Body of Christ is The Holy Spirit, that’s why any war wedged against Her will FAIL.
The word “Church” appeared for the first time in the gospels. And Jesus speaking said this:
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. - Matthew 16:18 (KJV)
First thing I want to point out is the speaker. Jesus Christ our Lord is the speaker here.
Secondly, the word ‘my’ is a derivative of the word ‘mine’ which is a possessive pronoun. In our urban lingua, we can say Jesus owned it. Jesus says the Church is His own, it is no man’s.
Jesus went further and said that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. That’s why He went to Hell, made a public spectacle of the forces of darkness (Colossians 2:15) and collected the keys of Hell & Death (Revelation 1:18).
When a man decides to ‘possess’ or ‘own’ a church (because you can’t own THE CHURCH) then you should be ready to go to Hell as often as necessary to quell any ‘civil’ disobedience there and maybe also collect the keys from Jesus. It is worth noting that the keys we possess as believers are not those keys rather the keys of the kingdom of heaven which Jesus handed to us see Matthew 16:19.
The word church was translated from the Greek word ἐκκλησία - ekklēsia; which means “a calling out”, i.e. religious congregation Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both): - assembly, church.
That’s why if you believe in Jesus, you were delivered or “called out” from the region of darkness. Jesus called out to you, you answered the called.
Glory!
Who hath DELIVERED US FROM the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: - Colossians 1:13 (KJV)
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath CALLED you OUT of darkness into his marvellous light: - 1 Peter 2:9 (KJV)
Believers are members of the body of Christ, but beyond members we are members of one another. This is one revelation that has not dawned on the church - members of one another So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one MEMBERS ONE OF ANOTHER. - Romans 12:5 (KJV)
Our allegiance is not to Christ alone but to one another. The scripture clearly says we are interconnected to each other and should exist outside each other. (I will do another write up in details on this).
We should look out for each other
We should stand with each other
We should suffer with each other
We should rejoice with each other
That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. - 1 Corinthians 12:25-27 (KJV)
As I close, I will write less and let the scriptures do the talking.
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. - 1 Corinthians 12:12 (KJV)
Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. - 1 Corinthians 12:27 (KJV)
No man should obscure Christ before the people, the church. Christ is the saviour of THE CHURCH no man is.
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. - Ephesians 5:23 (KJV)
All through the scripture, I challenge you to find where it is written, “a church”. You won’t. What you will only find is THE CHURCH. The BODY is of CHRIST not any man’s - Colossians 2:17
